CHAPTER 17

Just as she had tucked her men’s shirt into the waistband of her trousers, a knock came at the door. Freddie glanced over at Mrs. Bell. Who could it be at seven o’clock in the morning?

Frowning suspiciously, Mrs. Bell crossed to open the door a few inches. “Sir! What business do you have here?”

Freddie was annoyed to feel her heart speed up at the sound of Anthony’s deep, amused voice filtering in from the corridor.

“My dear Mrs. Bell, I have brought a breakfast tray. I must discuss an important matter with Professor Loudon—in private.”

“Private?” The housekeeper sent Freddie a questioning glance.

“It’s all right,” she assured her. “As I have told you, Mr. St. Briac and I are engaged in a bit of subterfuge to bring a villain to justice.”

“Hmm.” Mrs. Bell opened the door and Anthony walked past her with a tray laden with covered dishes. “I’ll leave you two, then, but know I’ll have my ears open, sir.”

“I shall be on my best behavior, ma’am.” His tone held an undercurrent of amusement.

When they were alone, Frederica felt her pulse accelerate. How to behave with this man given yesterday’s shocking events? Not only had she revealed her physical passion for him, but she’d also pushed him away by saying many harsh things she might come to regret. She wanted to extinguish all her strong feelings, but too many sparks would not be snuffed out.

Anthony placed the tray on the small table near the window and sketched a bow. “Breakfast is served, my lady.”

Freddie tried not to notice how intensely attractive he was, a dark roguish wolf among the sheep of the civilized London. He held her chair for her, then took away the covers to reveal dishes of ham, warm raisin buns, apple compote, and coddled eggs. As he poured chocolate into her cup, Freddie watched his tanned, deft fingers and remembered how he had cupped her naked breast and lowered his mouth to her nipple.

“It looks …delicious,” she stammered, feeling her cheeks heat.

“You’ve forgotten a few parts of your disguise,” Anthony observed as he took the chair opposite hers.

“I did not forget. You interrupted me.” Freddie put a hand up to her hair, pinned into a loose Apollo knot atop her head. “Besides, I was in no hurry to put on that awful wig and mustache. I must say, I am sick to death of them.”

Anthony nodded, smiling, but his gaze lingered on her chest. “I was referring to something else.”

Instantly, her breasts tingled. “Oh my!” She looked down and saw the curves outlined against her soft cambric shirt. Reaching for a large napkin, she tucked it into her collar. “There. That will do for now.”

Anthony was watching her with hooded eyes as he took the other chair. “I couldn’t wait to see you today.”

The center of her being warmed at his words, but Freddie reminded herself that she had sworn to maintain a safe distance. “I surmise you have news of some sort about our plans for Terrance Buskin?”

“I went out last night.
